Champaign County YMCA Breaks Ground on New Facility
Construction begins on CCYMCA and Larkin’s Place
CHAMPAIGN – City officials, supporters and community members gathered today to witness the first shovels going into the ground at the new home of the Champaign County YMCA. Located at 2501 Fields South Drive, the building will offer activities and programs that promote youth development, healthy living and social responsibility in Champaign-Urbana and the surrounding communities.
“Today is the day!” announced CCYMCA Board Chair Tim Johnson. “After many years and through the efforts of many dedicated volunteers, we are excited to finally begin construction on a much-needed new Y facility.”
The facility, scheduled for completion in early 2012, will be an all-inclusive recreation destination unparalleled in the country. It is home to Larkin’s Place, which provides programming and recreation opportunities for all people, including those with disabilities.
“The Y is for everybody,” explained Mark Johnson, Chief Executive Officer of the Champaign County YMCA. “With this new facility, we’ll be able to better serve people of all ages and abilities. This new Y will be a home to popular Y programs such as swim lessons, youth sports leagues and day camp.”
Lead gifts from Rick and Jeanene Stephens, Shad and Ann Khan, Dick and Rosann Noel, Larry and Karen Stephens, and Carle (with gift of land) have helped to secure more than $12 million toward the $16 million goal of the New Beginnings Campaign. Community support is still necessary to raise the remaining funds.
“This is the culmination of a lot of hard work by former board members as well as present who have given so much to put this Y on the map,” said Rick Stephens. “The new Y is going to be a tremendous asset for our community. Finally, this long awaited dream is coming to reality.”
Project construction manager Broeren Russo and Ratio Architects of Champaign will begin construction immediately on the 75,000-square foot facility.
“My whole family can’t wait to visit this new Y,” said Dr. Karen Eisenmenger of Philo. “The Y will have supportive programs for two of my sons, who were diagnosed with autism, but will also provide activities for my other child as well as things we can all participate in as a family.”
